Grasshopper Sparrow

Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture of two grasshopper sparrows by Geoffrey C. Smith

4.5"L x 4.5"W x 11.25"H

Honoring one of the most critically endangered songbirds in North America, this sculpture balances a profound ecological narrative with delicate sculptural harmony. This fine art bronze sculpture features two Florida grasshopper sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum) perched vertically along an organic, winding branch structure. Unlike most songbirds that take to the sky, these elusive birds famously tend to walk or run across the ground, which is a unique behavioral trait reflected in the sculpture's low, beautifully balanced structure.

Using the traditional investment lost-wax casting method, the smooth, quiet forms of the birds contrast elegantly against the deeply grooved textures of their weathered perch. The custom, hand-applied patina relies on warm, natural earth tones layered with soft iridescent highlights that mirror the sun-dappled Florida prairies. Celebrated for a distinct, buzzing song that mimics the sound of a grasshopper, this magnificent species has faced significant declines over the past few decades. This limited edition work honors the vital ongoing research and captive breeding initiatives championed by FWC and White Oak Conservation to reintroduce these remarkable birds back into the wild.
