Retreating Giants, Enduring Lives

Original Oil Painting on Linen of a Pod of Harbor Seals by Geoffrey C. Smith, 2024

72"W x 48"H

Resting on floating ice, Retreating Giants, Enduring Lives captures a pod of harbor seals in front of the Northwest Glacier. Using oil and wax on linen, this hand-painted work by Geoffrey Smith uses rich impasto, making the scene feel more sculpted than painted. Pale blue tones bleed into slate and shadow, capturing the luminous mass of glacial ice and the dark softness of seal bodies at rest. Serving as a striking focal point, this large-scale painting brings a sense of quiet resilience and the enduring spirit of the Alaskan wilderness into any space.

Deep into the Kenai Fjords, this stretch of Resurrection Bay offers fragile sanctuary to generations of harbor seals. Here, the geography becomes a shield; a narrow spit nearly closes off the upper fjord, forming a protected basin where killer whales rarely enter. For these seals, it is a rare refuge. However, the Northwest Glacier, like so many in Alaska, is rapidly retreating.

Over the last century, the glacier has pulled back 2 miles. Its recession tells a story of warming, and yet life endures. Harbor seals return here each spring to pup and raise their offspring. They are an essential species, acting as barometers of the ocean's health. In this quiet pocket, their presence reminds us that survival isn't always loud; it floats quietly in the cold.

“I painted this not as a warning, but as a love letter to stillness. A portrait of refuge, of persistence, of fragile peace carved between ice and time.”

— Geoffrey C. Smith
