A snipe in flight

Snipe

The Wilson's Snipe  (Gallinago delicata) are found around wetlands, banks, and marsh areas in most of the United States. These little plump birds can actually fly up to 60mph. Their speed along with their zig-zag flight pattern makes them a difficult target to hit. This is why in the 1770s the nickname for those known to hunt snipe well was a "sniper." Hence the term we now use for someone that is a good shot with a gun.
