"The Circle of the Salmon" captures a brown bear standing in the rushing waters of the Russian River, its jaws clamped around a brilliant red sockeye salmon. All around the predator, the river pulses with life as flashes of crimson scales and emerald heads mark the sockeye returning home, driven upstream by instinct to spawn. Executed with an expressive, heavy impasto, the palette knife work channels the raw energy of the churning turquoise water and the vibrant vitality of the fish. This tactile execution is deeply inspired by direct observation in the cold, clear waters of the Alaskan wild.
This isn’t just a painting of a bear catching a fish; it’s a portrait of an ecosystem in perfect harmony. The salmon serve as the heartbeat of the river, their bodies providing vital nourishment to the bears, gulls, ravens, magpies, and foxes. Even the trees along the riverbanks grow taller and stronger from the nutrients brought upstream. Scientists have discovered nitrogen from salmon carcasses embedded inside the rings of Sitka spruce hundreds of feet from the water.
The journey of the sockeye is nothing short of mythic. Born in these headwaters, they journey to the ocean to mature over several years before navigating back to the exact gravel bed where they hatched. Their return fuels the entire regional web of life. Primal, majestic, and entirely present, the bear understands its role within this seasonal convergence, taking only what is required to remain a balanced part of the natural cycle.
