Nome Moose in Firelight

Nome Moose in Firelight

Original Oil on Canvas by Geoffrey C. Smith, 2024

24"w x 18"h

A moose stands mid-step, alert and imposing, its antlers framed against a field of ochre, rose, and deep burgundy. This painting captures that powerful in-between moment - when an animal pauses, aware of its surroundings, deciding where to go next.

Moose are built for northern landscapes. They move through wetlands and open tundra with a kind of quiet gravity - massive, solitary, and deeply tied to the rhythm of the land. Here, the thick palette knife strokes echo that weight and motion, with bold color building a world that feels both real and uneasy,

The color palette hints at heat - part of the World on Fire thread that runs though this series - but the story here is more subtle. It's about the animal itself: not in conflict or collapse, but simply being.
