Dance of the Depths, Reaching Low
Limited Edition Bronze Sculpture of an octopus by Geoffrey C. Smith
21.5" L x 18" W x 12" H
There is a captivating, undulating energy to Dance of the Depths Reaching Low. Rather than capturing the creature in static symmetry, this fine art bronze sculpture explores the fluid intelligence and alien grace of the octopus as it stays closely anchored to the seafloor topography. Designed as a deliberate structural study in a multi-part series, the low-profile composition focuses on the sweeping horizontal movement of the limbs as they test the currents, creating an evocative play of negative space and hidden shadows underneath.
Using the ancient investment lost-wax casting method, the heavy bronze beautifully balances the smooth, rounded form of the mantle against the highly tactile, rhythmic pattern of individually sculpted suckers along the underside of each arm. The custom, multi-layered studio patina relies on deep ocean tones and iridescent metallic highlights, giving the surface a shifting, lifelike sheen that responds organically to changing ambient room light.
