At first glance, you see a mother bear with three cubs but look closely. There are two inquisitive older cubs on the shore. Smith was inspired to create this masterpiece after a trip to Wolverine Creek on the Cook Inlet when a Mother bear had a showdown with two older cubs on the beach. By dramatically chasing away the older cubs, the mother bear protected her young and imprinted the moment in the artists mind. This painting depicts the moments before.
