A Guide to the Original Oil Paintings of Geoffrey C. Smith

While many people are familiar with my work in bronze, collectors still ask me from time to time who created the paintings displayed on the walls of the gallery.

The answer is that I did.

I began painting about ten years ago, after spending decades working as a sculptor. What began as another way to explore the natural world gradually became an important part of my work. I often paint the same wildlife I study in bronze, while also exploring the landscapes, shorelines, and waters of Florida, Alaska, and beyond.

Paintings Inspired by Wildlife

Wildlife remains one of my most familiar subjects. My paintings include herons, egrets, pelicans, spoonbills, birds of prey, marine life, and animals encountered during my travels.

Sometimes the animal fills the canvas, allowing me to focus on its posture, color, and character. In other paintings, it becomes part of a larger landscape. These pieces bring together two things that have always interested me: the animal itself and the environment in which it lives.

I work primarily with a palette knife, building each painting through layers of color and texture. The raised surface catches the light and gives the finished work a physical quality that is best appreciated in person.

Landscapes and Seascapes

Painting has allowed me to explore a different type of subject in landscapes and seascapes.

My landscape and seascape paintings are inspired by places I have experienced firsthand, from Florida marshes and rivers to the mountains and wild country of Alaska. Light and weather can transform these places quickly, and those brief changes often become the starting point for a painting.

Seascape paintings in particular were a study in aptitude. The coast is a beautiful thing, and it never looks the same two days in a row. Exploring the changing view of the ocean in art is one of the gifts that paintings have allowed me.
